Replacing a Tape Backup System

When NCC Education first came into contact with Altinet, their biggest struggle was the outdated tape backup system that they had in place. Tape-based backup methods have been around since the advent of the computer industry in the 1950s - of course the technology used in tape backups has evolved somewhat in this time, but these advancements still can't compare to that of the cloud and disk.

The main problem NCC were facing - and the main problem for most tape backup users - was the extremely time-consuming data restoration, which can take days or even weeks to complete depending on the system in use, storage location, and how data is organised. In NCC's case, the organisation were paying a third-party company to securely store their backup tapes, meaning delivery back to site had to be requested for every restore. 

These issues led NCC to trial Barracuda's on-premise backup appliance, which offers a variety of data recovery methods including basic file restore, restore via download, local web interface, and bare metal recovery, making it quick and simple to recover back to a snapshot in time or just restore a set of affected files.

Meeting Government Regulations

NCC Education were satisfied that Barracuda's Backup appliance would effectively solve their data restore concerns, however due to the nature of their business they were also facing a new challenge in meeting government regulations. Being an educational organisation, NCC are governed by Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation), and one of their requirements of NCC was to introduce a reliable Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BCDR) plan to protect student data.
